An anniversary date
Lisa and I celebrated our 6th anniversary on July 9th. We decided to treat ourselves to a nice night in the city with great food and drink.
We headed downtown on the train at around 3PM. Our first stop was Smith & Wollensky for some drinks. It was a gorgeous day with a nice breeze on the river and the S&W patio shaded by skyscrapers. After looking at the menu, we couldn’t help but to order some appetizers with our daytime martinis: half-dozen oysters on the half shell, and baby heirloom tomatoes with basil and bufala mozzarella. Both amazingly delicious and good matches for a vodka martini!
After S&W we headed over to Gilt Bar, a dark, taverny place with a ridiculously awesome selection of whiskeys and hand-crafted drink specials. Lisa chose the Vodka Smash, a very mojito-ish concoction that took the bartender nearly 5 minutes to make, and included mint leaves, ginger beer, and zested grapefruit peel. After a few free samples and a recommendation from the bartender, I went with the Rowan’s Creek bourbon (Bardstown, KY)on the rocks. If you like Crown Royal (as anyone who knows me will agree that I do), Rowan’s Creek is a must-try.
For dinner we wandered back to Fulton’s on the River. We sat at the bar and enjoyed a few beverages while waiting for our table outside. Again, after browsing the menu I couldn’t help but order a starter, and went with the seared scallops with sautéed spinach, tomato confit, and bacon foam. Yes, it was as good as it sounds — like eating candy, but covered in whipped up bacon grease. Mmmm, bacon. For dinner I had the Oscar Filet with crab meat, asparagus, and hollandaise. Lisa had the Béarnaise Filet, and we shared some pan-roasted wild mushrooms, Yukon mashed potatoes, and more steamed asparagus (can’t get enough asparagus). Eating great food outside, the river and city lights at dusk, the perfect weather, and the best company — it doesn’t get much better than that.
Our final stop of the night was Frontier Lounge, to help celebrate Andrew & Elena’s engagement! A great ending to a perfect day filled with food, drink, sun, city, and friends, all put together by my best friend of all and wife of six years, Lisa. Happy Anniversary!
